Neural Science PhD Student at New York University

What was your international learning experience?
I was an English Conversation Leader for 2+ years while doing my masters at Western.

How did that experience impact you?
The English Conversation Program was one of my favourite parts of graduate school at Western. I got to meet new international English as a Second Language (ESL) students each semester, and over the course of each term got to see them improve their English conversational skills and speaking confidence. It is always fun to see how different everyone's backgrounds and upbringings are. The best part of my role was learning about others' countries and cultures. The program is set up in such a way that it really facilitates a two-way exchange of knowledge and experiences. Rather than it being a student/teacher setting, it always felt more like a group of friends meeting up and hanging out each week. I have made life-long friends in the process and would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

Why should students embrace international learning experiences?
It's easy to forget how big the world is! There are so many different languages and cultures to learn and experience. Gaining exposure to them has really helped broaden my perspective which has impacted basically all aspects of my life.

What is a fun fact about you?
I am now doing my PhD in New York City, so it looks like the tables have turned and now I am the international student!
